Hate to fly?

Does anybody enjoy flying these days?  I hear a lot of complaints – uncomfortable seats, in flight movies didn’t work or the food was terrible, grumpy flight attendants, lost luggage…. the list goes on.  The fact of the matter is we have to fly to get to places we want to visit so how to make the most of it?

It used to be that flying was an adventure.  My first flight ever was from England to South Africa when our family emigrated – back  in 1967.  In those days you wore your Sunday best on a flight.  My little brother even had a suit and tie and my sister and I spent 14 hours in suspenders and stockings (pre-pantihose era).  Nowadays flying has become a chore to many.

Personally I love flying.  For one thing it gives me hours of uninterrupted me time.  I can watch movies, read, sleep without being interrupted by phone calls, children or even grandchildren.  I always make sure I travel very comfortably in layers – you never know if you might get the cold side of the plane (how weird is that).  I take a large shawl rather than a coat as it serves as a blanket or an extra pillow.  I always travel with minimum hand luggage if I have checked my main suitcase – I really don’t need the hassle of a large carry on and a purse and a shawl.  Yes I do take a sleeping tablet after supper for overnight flights – but please do check with your doctor first.  A funny and true story – a friend who is terrified of flying had some particularly effective sleeping tablets from her doctor.  They checked into their flight, got on board, settled in and before take off she took her tablet.  By the time the pilot realised that the flight was mechanical she was out cold and had to be carried off the flight by stretcher ….. how embarrassing.  So beware.

My best flying tip?  A gin and tonic after take off is just the thing to get me into the holiday mood.

Bon voyage!
